Most Nokia phones don't have a "Nokia Composer" program built inside the phone, a software that makes it possible for users to actually type a ringtone directly on their keypad.
For all other Nokia phones that support customizable ringtones (actually, tens of very widely available models), a new ringtone has to be first composed on a computer or downloaded from the Internet then sent to the phone using one of the following methods:
- a specialized website takes care of sending it
to your phone using Smart Messaging
- you transfer it yourself through a data cable
- you transfer it yourself through a free sms gateway
What is Smart Messaging?
It's a protocol designed by Intel and Nokia, and by which various software
upgrades -- including ringtones -- can be made "over the air", through
your wireless connection. Smart Messaging is in fact basically a special type of
Text Message, with its own prefixes and codes, that makes it possible for the
phone to recognize the message as -- instead of a text message to the attention
of the user -- a "functional" message that should be treated as: a
ringtone, a screen logo, in some cases even a business card or group graphics
that can be used to identify who is calling. More applications are envisioned by
Nokia and partners.
Why can't Ericsson, Siemens and other
phones receive ringtones by SMS?
Currently, only Nokia supports smart messaging. The situation may change as
Motorola and Ericsson add that feature to their handsets. Some rare European
Motorola phones such as the V50 and V100 can already receive ringtones through
smart messaging. Audiovox and Philips are planning on adding that feature on
their future phones too.
Since the Smart Messaging protocol is royalty-free, these companies would be able to implement that feature in their phones at a low cost, thus more easily.
Why can't I compose or copy and paste and
send myself a ringtone through a free SMS gateway?
As opposed to using a data cable or a specialized ringtones site to send a new
ringtone to your phone, it would be nice to simply be able to copy and paste a
ringtone directly into and SMS message and send it to your phone through a
regular free sms gateway but is it possible?
As of January 2001, it was believed that only new phone owners could send themselves ringtones by SMS without a data cable or without using any special service. But with the help of users of this site's forum, we have been able to do a lot of progress on understanding the SMS ringtones issue with Nokia phones. As of January 15, 2001, it seems that at least two Nokia GSM phones, the 7110 and the 6120, can also receive ringtones copy-and-pasted in a free sms gateway, provided that they are recent with a recent software version.
